Ed gave us a description of subtitling generally, and DotSub specifically. DotSub is a web-based video subtitling site that allows a user to upload a video, create a transcript, timecode that transcript, and overlay the resulting translation onto the video. It doesn't burn the translation/subtitle onto the video, which has licensing implications. Nor is the newly-subtitled video downloadable, but the transcript of the subtitles with timecodes is. In general a web based subtitling and subtitle translation service replaces traditional methods, that cost between 150-400 dollars an hour.
